Just checking in....

I'm too tired from our weekend in Santa Clara attending the IAGSDC Convention to describe it, but rootbeer1 did such a nice job you can read about it here. We had a great time, Steve got to contradance for the first time ever (he loves it!) and we spent quality time with many friends, and made some new ones.

Here's one picture of Steve and me dancin' away, courtesy of keanubear's hubby Greg. If you look closely, you can also see markosf and ricksf in our square. This was during the Grand March/Opening Ceremonies, so we're in our club uniforms. Usually we wear shorts and t-shirts.

You're so cute in that photo! Makes me sorry I was too much of a curmudgeonly grump to come down Saturday. Also in the photo behind you are Rusty and Michael the Chemist, neither of whom can be cajoled into lj-ing.

Thanks!! It was a great square. I was surprised when after all the speeches they told us to square up and dance a tip, but it was great, with everybody in their uniforms and the whole convention dancing together.

Aw, shucks...thanks!! The black is so slimming--but afterwards, when we marched outside for a big group photo, we were sorry. Nothing like standing out in the hot summer sun in black polyester!!

We're gonna run for the Board, then change the uniforms to something sensible, like tank tops and denim hot pants.

No, they're red--we look like some kind of Soviet scout troop.

Doesn't red kerchief mean you use your fist to square dance? [puzzled innocence]

I think that's when the hanky is in your pocket. When it's tied around your neck, it normally means you work at an Arby's or a Roy Rogers.

Or that you worship Paul Lynde.

Peter Marshall: Promethius was tied to the top of a mountain by the gods because he had given something to man. What did he give us?

Paul Lynde: I don't know what you got, but I got a sports shirt.

I'm just happy to see you!

Actually, it's a light saber--the theme for the convention was "Star Thru the Silicon Galaxy" (Star Thru is a square dance call) so we were given all sorts of sci-fi swag to carry.

It sounds fun!

It's a shame there's no dance hall cool enough to wear that uniform for real dancing... you guys look so great in them. In our club, people can choose to modify the uniform for coolness (like tank tops and rainbow suspenders with shorts.)

It's too bad we never got to dance together!

I know---we'll have to make a point of it at the next dance.

So Very Cute!
That is a great pic of you too. I always love seeing pics of couples who are so obviously together and enjoying each other's company.....basically any pic of the two of you in it. *G*

on a side note, is that Rusty to the left of you in the pic? (not the guy with the brown shorts/kilt/whatever, although he kinda looks familiar too)*G*

How did you guys get involved in this to begin with...I had never heard of it in the 8 years I was in SF.

Re: So Very Cute!
Thanks, Charles--you're very sweet. As Steve says below, that is indeed Rusty. He was dancing up a storm all weekend. I told him you asked about him (previous post), and he says hi back and hopes you're doing well.

A few years ago, the cultmaster our friend Rick (ricksf, between us in the picture above) was president of the Foggy City Dancers and invited us to come to an intro night, where you learn basic calls and dance to see what it's like. Last year (2004) at IBR, the club did a "Squares for Bears" demo that was basically the same thing, and Steve and I participated. The classes are on Tuesday evenings, and since Steve was free last fall (he had been taking college classes on Tuesdays for a few years), we decided to take the plunge. And now we're square dancers!!

Our club website is here, and there are links to other dance clubs and organizations if you want to learn more. It's great exercise, a group of nice, friendly people, and a lot of fun.
