Super Saturday

We got up early and hightailed it to Chinatown to pick up backawayslowly, then over the Bay Bridge to one of our favorite consumer temples, IKEA. Dave needed to get some furnishings for his new digs and we, well, we always welcome an opportunity to shop. But, first, breakfast in the IKEA cafeteria. For the holidays, the price has been reduced (from $1.99 to 99¢) for scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage (or both), and home fries. The usual cinnamon roll or Swedish pancakes weren't included, but could be had for an extra dollar. rootbeer1 ordered two breakfasts. The total bill for four breakfasts, plus two cinnamon rolls and beverages, was under $9.00. Such a deal!!!

Dave got a new computer desk, some very cool cubbyhole-like shelves, and assorted sundries. We were rather restrained for us--a new lamp and duvet cover for the master bedroom, wicker ring-beaded curtain for the wetbar, etc. And everything fit in our Matrix with room to spare! We love our car.

Back to The City to hit the Indian buffet at Bombay in the Castro, since Steve insisted on playing some CD of Indian Bollywood-type music on the way back. Then up to our place to unload the car and show Dave our house. Steve then brought Dave home and went to the gym. I stayed home, assembled the lamp, and did a bit of housework.

After dinner, Steve's brother David and his wife Andrea came over to visit and play cards. We love to play Hand and Foot, a form of canasta that 's loads of fun (and that Steve and David's mom makes us play constantly when she visits, so we're getting in practice for her upcoming stay in January). We used to play Hand and Foot with glovercom and Philip--we should have them over more for cards and games.

Anyhoo, the house was a bit chilly, and even though we turned on the heat, the radiant hot-water system we have takes a while to warm up, so we used our fireplace for the very first time. Yup, in almost 3 years, our fireplace was a virgin. We had a Duraflame log lying around, so I fired it up, and after a brief struggle with the damper and some smoke, we had a crackling fire to cheer us.

During our first hand, the phone rang. It was poohbeahjim, just arrived from Las Vegas (drove all day) and wanting to come over and pick up our futon, which we're lending him till he can buy a bed. He's going to be living with our friend Ed until Ray moves out next spring. We're so happy they'll be in SF!!! Yaaaaaay!!!!
