I called Hot Water Inc., the subcontractor that our local (well, Colma) Homo Depot uses for toilet installs, on Friday to set up a time. We scheduled a 10:00 - 13:00 window for Sunday (today). So we spent the morning puttering around. I brought my laptop down to the den and surfed the net while waiting for the plumbers, since we can't hear the doorbell from upstairs. By 12:30 there was no sign of them, so I called to get an ETA. Got the answering machine instead. They finally showed up at 13:30, only to tell me they couldn't install the commode because there's carpet on the floor in the powder room, and they don't cut carpet. Apparently their deal with HD prevents them from doing anything the least bit not in contract. I dejectly cancelled the install--I'll get refunded the entire cost, with no trip fee.
So now we have a new occasional table in our dining room--the toilet (in its box) covered with a lovely throw. But I have a new plan. We want to redo the powder room later this year, replacing the carpet with tile, along with the upstairs master bath and several other projects. We have a contractor who's willing--I just have to write up the order. So, we're going to store the potty in the garage until then and have him install it (we were going to replace all three toilets anyway). As for the powder room john, I've decided to just buy a new float assembly and *gasp* attempt to install it myself. My home improvement book makes it seem really simple. I need to overcome my fear of plumbing. Wish me luck!!
Friday we went over to armaroundyou 's house for dinner. Our mutual friends ursusoz and syd_hart are visiting from Australia, so it was great to see them again. Also dining were chriskomater and his friend Dean. We had a luscious rib roast, Aussie-style roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, glazed carrots, fresh green beans sauteed with lots of garlic, a big salad, and broiled portobello mushrooms. A feast fit for 7 queens. I got to carve the roast beast, because of my father having been a meat cutter. I'm sure he was looking down from heaven saying, "Lick your fingers more while cutting it!" like he used to do, to my extreme gross-outment. rootbeer1 and I only had token portions of the carbs, because we're on South Beach induction, but made up for it with rich, meaty slabs of beef.
Yesterday Steve went to register for the Discovery Store weight loss challage. I'm passing on that--I don't need the extra pressure. So I stayed home and
Later that evening we met up at Twin Peaks with our friends Chris and Rich from Chicago. We went to the Anchor Inn, our favorite seafood restaurant in the Castro. Had a lovely time (garlic prawns with green beans). Rich is coming over tonight to stay over (as Chris travels south for work next week).
