Weekend Update

Friday I telecommuted, but felt kind of like I was coming down with something. Fatigue, muscle and joint achiness, mild sore throat. I stoked up with vitamin C and zinc, made a big pot of tea, and nursed myself through the day as I worked. We had planned to have dinner with Gregg and Jim (greggjim), but canceled, just in case I was infectous. When Steve (rootbeer1) got home from the office, he called upstairs "Call Rescue Rooter!!" There were signs around the ground drain in the atrium that the sewer was backing up, usually a once a year-or-so occurance due to roots from our luxurious bottle brush tree out front. I called RR, and they agreed to send a technician right out, but it got later and later and they called back several times to apologize, and we agreed to just have them come first thing in the morning. We'd refrain from flushing till then (ick). Soup for dinner and early to bed.

Next morning I felt 100% better. The Rescue Rooter guy showed up at 8:00 AM and cleared out the lateral. No roots, but a mass of what looked like strings or fabric fibers. We wondered which of our houseguests in the last few months had flushed this down the toilet. I finally remembered that a month or so ago I had washed a woven furniture throw, and remembered there were a lot of fibers that came off in the dryer's lint trap. So I guess even more got flushed down the drain from the washing machine. Mystery solved. I love debugging programs and problems like this.

After all this excitement, we headed over to Ikea to look for a new bookshelf for the living room, so we could attempt to reduce the clutter in our guestroom and studies. Had the yummy meatballs for lunch, and ran into Paul (bigredpaul) and David (dhpbear) in the store. We hugged, exchanged notes, then went on to pick up our Magiker bookcase and bring it home. Used our FasTrak for the first time and whizzed through the Bay Bridge toll gates. I love technology, even though now I guess the government can track our car's every movement.

Steve put the bookcase together. Halfway through, Dave and Calvin called and we met them for dinner at Powell's Place in the Western Addition, right across the street from our first apartment in SF. Great soul food. Then back to our place to finish the bookcase, eat derby pie and watch Monster House (the film, not the home makeover show). It was quite scary for an animated feature.

Today, we did gardening, cleaning, shopping (groceries! shoes! Hawaiian BBQ!) and enjoying the balmy summer winter weather. Tomorrow, I have a physical at 9:00 AM. My doctor will tell me I'm too fat. I will promise to go on NutriSystem.

That is all.

We thought of you as we were listening to it in the car!!

You'll have to come over and see the bookcase--it's groovy.

The doc always complains about my weight, but other than high blood pressure (which runs in my family, and I had even when I weighed 150 pounds), I'm pretty healthy. Low cholesterol, normal blood sugar, strong heart. My last doctor was almost disappointed the first time he saw my bloodwork.

But I'm sure losing some extra weight wouldn't hurt me....:-)

We went to Ono, in the shopping plaza on Sloat. They're OK, but I prefer L&L, which are all over the City. There's one two blocks from my office, and we've used them to cater lunch meetings.

We've learned to get the mini meal, which is still too much food for me to eat at one sitting. Well, along with spam musubi, which I absolutely have to get.

We don't flush our floss, but the house guests might have. But it definitely looked fabric-y, to my trained civil engineering eye.
